If you have ever heard of the author Jon Gordon, you might be familiar with, one word.
As written on Jon Gordon’s website:
In 1999, the authors (Jon Gordon, Jimmy Page, and Dan Britton) discovered a better way to become their best and live a life of impact. Instead of creating endless goals and resolutions, they found one word that would be their driving force for the year. No goals. No wish lists. Just one word. Best of all… anyone, anytime can discover their word for the year.
The book, One word That Will Change Your Life will inspire you to simplify your life and work by focusing on just one word for this year. That’s right! One Word creates clarity, power, passion and life-change. The simple power of One Word is that it impacts all six dimensions of your life – mental, physical, emotional, relational, spiritual, and financial. Simply put, One Word sticks. There is a word meant for you and when you find it, live it, and share it, your life will become more rewarding and exciting than ever.
Join thousands of people and hundreds of schools, businesses, churches, and sports teams who have found their one word… and discover how to harness the transformational power of One Word.
The book includes a personal Action Plan and simple process to help you discover your word for the year.
I have been fortunate enough to choose one word for the past four school years:
2016-2017 – Dedicate: I wanted to dedicate time to each important thing in my life while balancing them all out.
2017-2018 – Amiable: I wanted to be sure that I was doing all things with kindness.
2018-2019 – Grace: I wanted to do all things in a graceful manner and to give my students and family grace.
2019-2020: Grow
This year I chose the word, grow. I feel like there are so many aspects of my life that I am working on, so I want to focus on growing each of them this school year:
I want to grow..
In my faith
As a wife
As an educator
In Mindfulness
Faith: I believe that Jesus Christ is my savior, and I do believe that I have a personal relationship with him. I would like to spend this year deepening my relationship through bible studies, time spent reading His word, and through prayer.
Wife: Being Brent’s wife is one of the most special things I have ever done. I truly believe marriage is a 100-100 type of thing. We both need to be all in, but sometimes we need to be there to pick the other person up. I want to actively strive to show Brent how much I love and respect him with small acts throughout this next year. I want to build him up when he is down and to pray for him. When reading the book, The Power of a Praying Wife, I realized I don’t just need to pray for Brent, but I also need to pray for myself. I need to pray that I see the best of Brent in all situations, that I am give him grace, patience, and love.
Educator: I am in another new teaching position, in a new school, in a new district. There are so many new parts of my job that are scary and overwhelming, but I want to take it all in. I want to learn as much as I can this year so that I can provide my students with everything they need, whether that is academic, love, support, or encouragement.
Teachers Pay Teachers: Although I have been a seller on Teachers Pay Teachers for two years, this past few months I have put more time and energy into it than ever before. I really want to grow my store, Instagram, YouTube, and this blog.
Mindfulness: Mindfulness is hard. Especially at the beginning of the school year. Summer is ending so we want to fit everything in. I am working crazy hours just trying to survive this whole teaching thing. Life is flying a million miles an hour. That is why I need some time to be mindful. Time spent in prayer, doing yoga, relaxing; things that make me slow down for a minute.
It is never too late to pick your one word. If you are worried about being held accountable, email me or send me a message on Instagram, I would love to check in with you and be your accountability partner. If you’re having trouble thinking of a word, you can also go to this website. Personally, I used this list. First, I went through and highlighted all of the words that stood out to me. Then I went back through an eliminated about half. Lastly, I thought hard about each of the words that were still highlighted. I asked myself if it really depicted what I was trying to conquer for the year. I asked myself if the word really applied to my current situation. In the end, I chose grow.
